Aggregative oviposition varies with density in processionary moths—Implications for insect outbreak propensity

چکیده
In gregarious insects, groups commonly originate from females laying eggs in masses and feeding are established as soon larvae hatch. Some group-living insect species may aggregate beyond the individual parent level, such that offspring two or more egg develop within a common resource. Here we show aggregative oviposition can vary with population density at possibly be an important factor outbreak dynamics of phytophagous insects. We analysed data respect to mass aggregation for pine processionary moths, Thaumetopoea pinivora (in Sweden 2005–2019) T. pityocampa Spain 1973–1991). Both lay their feed groups. During study periods, both varied by least order magnitude. The showed strikingly similar patterns aggregation. Egg were overdispersed high density, few trees showing load masses. Our suggest explaining previously documented higher propensity outbreaks insects clusters, compared those eggs.

Reduction of oviposition time and enhanced larval feeding: two potential benefits of aggregative oviposition for the viburnum leaf beetle
1. Although aggregation in non-social arthropods is common, its adaptive value is not always clear. Oviposition behaviour of the viburnum leaf beetle (Pyrrhalta viburni ) is aggregative, with females preferring to lay eggs on twigs already infested by conspecifics. We previously showed that aggregative oviposition aided in overcoming host plant defences. Here we explore two additional benefits ...
متن کاملNoise in an insect outbreak model
We study the steady state properties of an insect (spruce budworm) outbreak model in the presence of Gaussian white noise. Based on the corresponding Fokker-Planck equation the steady state solution of the probability distribution function and its extrema have been investigated. It was found that fluctuations of the insect birth rate reduces the population of the insects while fluctuations of p...

Aggregative games are used to model strategic interaction in many elds of economics, including industrial organization, political economy, international trade, and public nance. In such games, each players payo¤ depends on his/her own actions and an aggregate of all players actions. Examples in industrial organization are the Cournot oligopoly model, logit and CES di¤erentiated products Ber...
متن کاملInfection of an Insect Vector with a Bacterial Plant Pathogen Increases Its Propensity for Dispersal
The spread of vector-transmitted pathogens relies on complex interactions between host, vector and pathogen. In sessile plant pathosystems, the spread of a pathogen highly depends on the movement and mobility of the vector. However, questions remain as to whether and how pathogen-induced vector manipulations may affect the spread of a plant pathogen. Here we report for the first time that infec...
متن کاملDual-treatment autodissemination station with enhanced transfer of an insect growth regulator to mosquito oviposition sites.
BACKGROUND The Asian tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus (Skuse), transmits important arboviral diseases and displaces native species. This peridomestic mosquito deposits eggs in natural and artificial containers. Container larval habitats tend to be cryptic and, therefore, difficult to reach by conventional insecticide treatments. We have developed an autodissemination station that transfers the ...
